"Hallowed Ground" by Erina Duganne

In the spirit of Halloween, All Souls Eve/All Saints Day, and all else hallowed, Gallery Lombardi has cooked up a fantastically bizarre grouping of works at once maniacal and enchanting. Selected by Billy Kirkland, Rachel Koper, Ron Prince, and Phillip Trussel -- who laboriously mulled over the 200 plus entries to come up with the 67 artists represented -- "Hallowed Ground" includes religious, mystical, and Halloween inspired artworks that deal, both literally and metaphorically, with issues ranging from the modestly consecrated to the blatantly blasphemous.

John Cobb, for instance, uses the traditional medium of egg tempera on panel for his devoutly conceived painting, Deposition. Others, however, take a less reverent approach to religion.

Both Bart Farar and Ruben Soriano approach the topic in a highly unorthodox manner, producing works that question religion's relationship to issues of indulgence and absolution. Sounds too serious and constructive? Not to fear, a good dose of the surreal and mysterious abound in the works of Joey Marez, Sam Magee, and Carol LaFayette. And, if you're into the really dark and sinister, Malleus Malleficarum by Stanislav Grezdo is your man. Depicting a character that seems to be taken straight out of Bram Stoker's Dracula, this murkily painted work is hauntingly creepy. Likewise, Kathleen Kendall's The Fortune of Birds is an ominous mixed-media work grounded in an occult sentimentality.

Whether the Word, Krishna, Christ, any number of saints, the divine in general, or the supernatural is your calling, "Hallowed Ground" has got it covered. So bust out your best costume and come partake in the opening night's fantastical revelry -- including dancing, music, projections, poetry, and all that artwork. Flicker begins the evening with fire dancing, followed by Doctari (a nine-piece traditional African drum troupe), Hopper's in the Attic, Ted!, and Aurora Plastics Company. And last, but certainly not least, a tarot reader will be on hand to assist with all your spiritual needs.
