Radical Nautical Jurors:

Ian Schultz, artist, former Blue Genie designer
Michael Schliefke artist, independent curator
Kevin Peake, artist, animator
Kev Tijerina, artist, animator
Rachel Koper, director of Gallery Lombardi

Show Theme:
In the words of Kevin Tijerina:
"The idea of Radical Nautical to me reflects a sense of the
exotic and exploration of the unknown. When the Age of Discovery
began, the ocean was the equivalent of space and the sailors,
astronauts. The lands and people they encountered were completely
alien to them and the fantastic animals and creatures they
encountered (Mermaids, the Kraken, and assorted sea monsters)
usually were revealed to be the domestic sea animals we see today.
Except for the Kraken, which I guess is real, since they caught
one off the coast of Japan, so who knows? ; )"

In the words of Kevin Peake:
"Sea monsters, mermaids, serpents, sea monkeys, Flying Dutchman,
the mysteries and legends of the sea are as deep and wide as anything
in the heavens. I can't wait to see what imaginations come up with."

In the words of Michael Schliefke:
Radical Nautical is all about the mystery of the sea. Growing up around New
England, I was never far from fishing boats, tales of Revolutionary War sea
battles, and the loads of ubiquitous grumpy old men with beards that seemed
to thrive in the salty air. I always tried to reconcile the reality of the
sea from the myths - giant sharks, sea monsters, and the legendary escapades
of pirates - but to no avail. I think that's the mystery that will make
this show great.
Show Theme:
The jurors for Radical Nautical are looking for artworks
about water and all things vaguely related to water Last year Ian
and Michael curated the romantically kitschy unicorn show
called "will there ever be another rainbow?" held at
Bolm Studios. The current call is an attempt to capture
the creative freedom of fantasy creatures. Kevin Peake &
Kevin Tijerina independently curated "Vulgar Display of Art:
The Art of Heavy Metal"
at the Continental Gallery.
They wanted to make a 'fairly tales' show with a brothers
grimm bent to it this year. Together we hope to make an
exhibition that shows the ingenunity of americana and pop art,
the magical power of sea myths, and our relationship to water.
