Austin, TX – June 7, 2004 – “first quarter 04”
by Austin-based artist and photographer Mel Sotos
is a 2 day solo exhibit and special event.
The event takes place on Friday, July 9th and
Saturday, July 10th. There will be two receptions,
each offering a different tone. Friday night plans
to be laid back and relaxed with TOrcH playing live
while Saturday promises be upbeat as dj manny,
booked regularly at the Red Fez, spins records.
Mel uses a special process of enlargement, transforming
an original ordinary Polaroid into an extraordinary
3’ by 3.5’ photographic print on canvas. Inspired by
architecture and capturing everyday expressions of life,
her large format Polaroids bridge the worlds of Austin
kitsch and artistic expression. The visually stimulating
images range from box cars to church bells; andthe results?
Well, remarkable. These aren’t your parent’s Polaroids
but we think they’d like them too.
