Artwork Statement: Julie Freedman My work reflects strong emotional dualities utilizing color, positive and negative space, and texture. I have been strongly influenced by living and working in Latin America. From 1997 to 2002 I lived in Brazil where I was exposed to a cultural miscegenation and return of tribal elements within the fiber of Brazilian society. I was affected deeply by this reality and I began to seek for the intangible evidence that a multiracial society breeds creativity, sexuality, spontaneity and freedom. This is what I hope reflects in my work. |
Artwork Statement: Pascal Simon Pascal M. Simon uses glass mosaics to express life. Her mosaics are rich in color and simplicity. She has created and sold mosaics for the last six years and gone from utilitarian objects, back splashes, floor designs to wall hangings and bejeweled musical instruments. “I was born and raised in Germany, and there first discovered that art was my passion, but it was not until I moved to Austin in 1991 that I allowed myself to “be” an artist. My art comes from the inside out - I have traveled around the world and collected impressions of my experiences, which are now strong influences on my artistic expression. Being a new mother has also greatly influenced my creativity. It has driven me to find meaning and subject in my pieces, and has inspired an ever-growing quest to convey story in my mosaics. Though I have experimented with paint, sculpture and found object art, it is the beauty of glass that has captured my attention. Glass is strong, beautiful, vibrant, and yet so fragile – it changes with light and reflects everything that I am.” |
